An Analysis of Various Vocabulary Learning Strategies Used by EFL University Students

Abstract


The current study aimed to identify vocabulary learning strategies used by EFL university students. The sample consisted of 290 students at Taibah University during the academic year 2020-2021. They responded to the questionnaire which consisted of forty-six items under five main categories. strategies. The five categories of the vocabulary learning strategies (Memory, Determination, Social, Cognitive, and Metacognitive) were used in this study following Schmitt’s taxonomy. The Results showed that Memory strategies got the highest rank followed by Social, Determination, and Cognitive strategies. Whereas Metacognitive strategies got the lowest mean scores.
